| PHYSICOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND PHYTOPLANKTON BIOMASS DURING EL NIÑO 1997-1998 IN BAHÍA CONCEPCIÓN, GULF OF CALIFORNIA. |
 |
| The biomass of the phytoplankton groups, as indicated by their pigment signatures, and the physicochemical conditions in the coastal bay Bahía Concepción are analyzed during 1997-1999. We wanted to observe the effects of El Niño 1997-98 on the structure of the phytoplankton biomass, particularly the dinoflagellate biomass, and the hydrographic conditions. During 1998, the average temperature of the column of water was higher and the concentrations of nutrients mainly nitrates were at their lowest. In general, highest phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) is associate with transitory hydrographic periods, mainly at the beginning of the stratification. The structure of the water column also changed with stratification beginning late and of short duration. These conditions were associated with a lower concentration of peridinin (pigment signature of the dinoflagellates). Annual variation of peridinin shows two peaks of maximum concentration: one in June and other in October, meanwhile during 1999 peridinin values were highest than 1998 and showed solely one peak, which was characterized by the presence of Alexandrium affine. These data suggest El Niño conditions have a negative effect on the proliferation of dinoflagellates. |
